Brewery Visit by Catherine Evans :: 08th March 2009

This week John and I visited our local Brewery, Hobsons, as members of the Shropshire Hills Sustainable Business group. Hobsons have excellent green credentials using ground source heat pumps to heat and cool the building, buying raw ingredients locally where possible and recycling the spent grain as animal food. The company is just about to install a wind turbine to generate electricity to power the site.

On top of all this they also produce an excellent range of real ales! John sampled the award winning Mild (Champion Beer of Britain 2007) whilst I enjoyed the latest addition to the range – Twisted Spire – a pale, crisp, low-gravity beer with a light, natural fizz. Owner Nick Davis was an excellent host and gave a fascinating tour of the brewing process as well as an insight into the company’s environmental ethos.
